Washington. Former US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, considered the architect of the modern security partnership between India and the US, has passed away. He was 68 years old. The family said that he died due to a heart attack. US President Joe Biden paid tribute to Carter, describing him as a “patriot by birth”. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar praised Carter as a global strategist.
Carter’s family said in a statement: “Former Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter’s family shares with great sadness and pain the information that Carter died of a sudden heart attack Monday morning in Boston at the age of 68. Biden said in a statement that Carter ” He was a patriot by birth. “A physicist and leader of the national security sector for decades, Carter made distinguished service at every level of civilian leadership in the State Department, including serving as the country’s 25th Secretary of State,” he said.
According to news agency PTI, former US Ambassador to India Richard Verma said, “Carter was also the architect of the modern US-India security partnership. No one has contributed as much to the shaping of relations in America in the last 20 years as he has.” Carter was defense secretary in the administration of former US President Barack Obama. He is credited with playing a key role in the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, lifting several arms export restrictions against India, and making India a major US defense partner.
External Affairs Minister of India S. Jaishankar said, “Very sad to learn about the passing of former US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter. It was a great experience working with him and he was a strong supporter of our defense relationship. He was also a global strategist, who always inspired to think.” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also mourned Carter’s death.
