Washington. Robert Solis, who was convicted in the murder of the first turbaned Indian-origin Sikh police officer Sandeep Dhaliwal in Texas, USA, has been sentenced to death. Dhaliwal was posted in Texas and was murdered at a traffic signal in 2019.
A jury has awarded the death sentence to Solis. During the sentence handed down on Wednesday, Solis did not respond. The jurors deliberated for only 35 minutes before recommending the death penalty. Solis, 50, was convicted by a criminal court in Houston’s Harris County for the murder of 42-year-old Dhaliwal. Dhaliwal came into the limelight when he was allowed to keep a beard and wear a turban while in the job. Dhaliwal was shot dead on 27 September 2019 at a traffic signal in North West Houston.
Officials said Dhaliwal had stopped Solis in a residential area and was shot several times from behind when he was on his way back towards his patrol car.
