New cases of polio were reported this year in countries like America, Britain and Mozambique.
Wherever polio is present in the world, it is still a threat to everyone.

Study On Covid-19 Vaccination: New cases of polio were reported in countries such as the US, UK and Mozambique this year due to the halt of vaccination campaigns at the start of the Kovid-19 pandemic. An expert associated with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave this information. Dr. Anand Shankar Bandopadhyay, deputy director of technology, research and analytics in the Foundation’s polio team, said the detection of the poliovirus is also a reminder that if it exists anywhere in the world, it still poses a threat to all. Is.

Polio virus was found in dirty water in one part of London and a few months ago in New York. A case of wild poliovirus was reported in Mozambique in May and in Malawi in February this year. Bandopadhyay said, “Getting any case of polio is the result of slow vaccination rate. When the Kovid-19 epidemic broke out in 2020, the polio campaign was stopped for four months to protect communities and health workers from corona virus infection. Due to this the polio virus spread in the countries.

Bandopadhyay, an epidemiologist who graduated from the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in 2005, said it was clear that the Covid pandemic had a negative impact on vaccination rates across the world. However, there have been other challenges such as misinformation, inadequacy in immunization and providing every community with a dose of polio, he said. The discovery of poliovirus in the US and UK and the spread of wild poliovirus in Malawi and Mozambique are reminders that if polio exists anywhere in the world, it is a threat everywhere.

According to the website of the ‘Global Polio Eradication Initiative’ (GPEI), an agency of the World Health Organization (WHO), the last cases of wild poliovirus were in the US and UK in 1979 and 1982, respectively, while the last time in Malawi and Mozambique was 1992. I had come to the fore. Bandopadhyay said, “polio free countries are not polio risk free till the global eradication of this disease.”

Responding to a question, he said that the authorities in the US and UK are dealing with it properly. He has started an immediate vaccination campaign for those in the risk category and has accelerated the system of monitoring the disease. Bandopadhyay described India’s success against polio as one of the greatest achievements of global health. He said that many people thought that this country would be the last country to stop this disease because it is a geographically challenging country.

Bandopadhyay, who has contributed to India’s polio eradication and measles surveillance initiatives, said the Indian government should maintain a high vaccination rate against polio. Significantly, in 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared India, along with 10 other countries in South East Asia, as polio-free.
