According to the BBC, Maurice Hastings had been in prison for 38 years for the 1983 murder of Roberta Wiedermeier in California and two attempted murders. But new DNA evidence has shown that he had another killer. Not only this, the murderer died in the year 2020. He was also in jail at that time.
Released after DNA test
Maurice Hastings called himself innocent from the start. In 2000, his request for a DNA test was rejected by the district attorney. He was finally able to claim innocence at DNA’s Conviction Integrity Unit in 2021, and a DNA test in June found that the semen was not his. Instead the DNA profile matched that of a man who was convicted of kidnapping. Talking to the Associated Press, Hastings said, ‘I prayed for many years that these days come. I just want to enjoy my life.

In 1983, Roberta Wiedermeier was murdered in a car. Marks of a bullet were found on the head. Earlier she had been sexually assaulted. Hastings was later charged with murder and prosecutors demanded the death penalty. The court convicted him and in 1988 was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
