Digital Desk, Santiago. Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has declared a constitutional state of emergency in four northern provinces, giving the armed forces special powers to control irregular migration at the border.
The measure, which will last for 15 days with the possibility of a two-week renewal, involves the deployment of 672 military personnel and 100 police officers to guard Chile’s northern border with Bolivia and Peru, Xinhua news agency reported.
According to the government, the South American country is facing a migrant and security crisis mainly in the provinces of Arica, Parinacota, Tamarugal and El Loa, through unauthorized crossings and due to a huge influx of migrants.
The president explained in a press statement that the police and military would conduct patrols and investigations, set up new observation posts, deploy drones and unmanned aircraft, use helicopters for surveillance and relocation, as well as night vision cameras, thermal cameras and satellites Will also install communication equipment.
Currently, dozens of people are stuck in border towns, awaiting an official resolution, after entering the country through unauthorized crossings.
Chile recently introduced a migration law that seeks to order migrant flows into the country. That’s according to Pinera, who said he is in talks with neighboring countries of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru to resolve the situation.
The new rule will immediately deport people who entered the country irregularly without any trial.
