Digital Desk, Hanoi. The government of Vietnam has agreed to reopen the country’s borders for international tourism from 15 March. On Wednesday, Vice Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam approved a proposal by ministries on the timing of tourism reopening in the context of safe and flexible adaptation to the COVID-19 pandemic, Xinhua news agency reported.
Dam urged the competent authorities to announce a detailed reopening plan for localities nationwide, as well as propose a policy for issuing visas for international arrivals.
In a meeting on Tuesday, the ministries of tourism, health, foreign affairs and transport proposed that the government resume the unilateral visa waiver policy for 13 countries and the bilateral visa waiver regime for 88 countries and territories from before the pandemic. Earlier, Vietnam had decided to stop the visa waiver regime from 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the proposal, foreign tourists visiting Vietnam will no longer need to book tour packages with designated travel agencies in accordance with the vaccine passport testing program launched in November last year. As of February 10 this year, nearly 9,000 foreign arrivals were welcomed under the programme.
Under the proposal, international tourists will also have to pay an average of $30 per person to enjoy insurance benefits of up to $10,000 for COVID-19 treatment in Vietnam. The Southeast Asian country has lifted all restrictions on the frequency of international flights starting Tuesday.
