Chandigarh. Indian-origin Manpreet Monika Singh has been sworn in as the judge of Harris County on Sunday. She has become the first female Sikh judge in America. Monica Singh was born and raised in Houston and now lives in Blair with her husband and two children. There are an estimated 500,000 Sikhs in the US, of which 20,000 live in the Houston area. Monika says that her election as a judge means a lot to the Sikh community.

The family came to America in the 70s
Abbreviation of Manpreet’s father A.J. who is an architect. In the early 1970s, he went to America to fulfill his dreams. She says that during that time my father faced discrimination as a turbaned Sikh and at that time there was no platform for immigrants to raise their voice against discrimination as well. Monica says that times have changed now. My brother was also bullied in school, but now everyone knows that we can raise our voice. Although it (discrimination) is not really over yet, we all still go through some level of discrimination. She says that as an advocate I have always tried to find a resolution and bring a change.


Manpreet is an ambassador for women of all colors

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said it was a proud day for the Sikh community, but also a proud day for people of all colors, who are seeing the diversity of the city of Houston in the court’s diversity. Manpreet is not only an ambassador for Sikhs, but she is also an ambassador for women of all colors.
