Biden’s big statement on China’s spy balloon case
US President Biden said – I do not want a new cold war
Biden will talk to Xi Jinping on the flying object matter
Washington: US President Joe Biden’s big statement on Chinese spy balloon has come to the fore. Biden said on Thursday that he does not want another cold war, he will talk to Chinese President Xi Jinping on this issue, but I do not regret shooting down Chinese balloons. He said, “I will not apologize for that and if this continues in the future, we will continue to take such decisions for the safety of the citizens.”
According to HT’s report, Biden said in response to Beijing’s complaints, “I look forward to talking with President Xi. I hope we get to the bottom of this, but I will not apologize for shooting down that balloon. Biden has not yet clarified when he will meet Xi. This is Biden’s most outspoken statement after three unidentified objects, including a China balloon, were shot down by an American fighter jet.
China says the 200-foot (60 m) balloon shot was to monitor weather conditions, but Washington says it was clearly a surveillance balloon carrying massive electronics. Three unidentified objects were also seen over Alaska, Canada and the Yukon Territory after a Chinese spy balloon was shot down off the South Carolina coast on February 4.
Biden said, “We don’t yet know exactly what these three things were. The US intelligence community is still trying to learn more about the three unidentified objects. The search is on whether they were related to the Chinese spy balloon program or whether they were surveillance vehicles of another country. The US had shot down all these objects, calling them a threat to civil aviation.
The Financial Times quoted sources as saying that the Pentagon’s top China official, Michael Chase, is planning to visit Taiwan in the coming days. Chase will be the most senior US defense official to visit the island since 2019. China claims the democratically-ruled island, while the US has followed a non-committal policy for decades.
