Bill Gates writes in his blog, ‘India as a whole gives me hope for the future. It’s going to be the most populous country in the world, which means you can’t solve most of the problems there without solving them on a very large scale. And yet, India has proved that it can deal with great challenges. The country has eradicated polio, reduced the spread of HIV, reduced poverty, reduced infant mortality and increased access to sanitation and financial services, he said. The Microsoft co-founder also said that India has developed a world-leading approach to innovation, which ensures that solutions reach those who need them.
He further wrote, ‘When the rotavirus vaccine, which blocks the virus that causes many fatal cases of diarrhoea, was too expensive to reach every child, India decided to make the vaccine itself. India worked closely with experts and funders (including the Gates Foundation), set up facilities to manufacture rotavirus vaccines, and built large-scale delivery channels for vaccine distribution. By 2021, 83 percent of 1-year-olds had been vaccinated against rotavirus, and these low-cost vaccines are now being used in other countries around the world. Talking about its funding at the Pusa-based Indian Agricultural Research Institute, or IARI, Gates said, “The Gates Foundation joins hands with India’s public sector and CGIAR institutions to support the work of researchers at IARI.”
Bill Gates said, ‘They found a new solution: chickpea varieties that have a 10 percent higher yield and are more drought-resistant. One variety is already available to farmers, and several others are currently under development at the institute. As a result, India is better prepared to feed its people and support its farmers in a warming world. It is no exaggeration to say that India’s agricultural future is bright. One of the reasons challenges like climate, hunger, and health seem insurmountable is that we don’t yet have all the tools needed to solve them. But I am optimistic that soon one day we will have all the solutions to overcome these challenges and for this we can thank the innovators and researchers of IARI.
