According to a Reuters report, cases of H5N1 bird flu have been reported in wild animals in Chile since late last year. Recent cases in industrial farms have forced the government to stop poultry exports. Industrial cases have also been detected in Argentina, but Brazil, the world’s largest exporter of poultry, is free of this flu. Chilean health officials noted that the virus may have been transmitted to humans from birds or marine mammals, but there is no information on human-to-human transmission.
