Colombia. Beleaguered e-cigarette maker JUUL Labs Inc. will pay $462 million to settle lawsuits filed by six states and the District of Columbia. JUUL has settled cases in California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Mexico and New York involving allegations of selling underage vapers. The company denies any wrongdoing, saying it is “near total resolution” of the legal claims, and has settled more than $1 billion in legal claims with 47 states and territories.

Today’s settlement, led by New York Attorney General Leticia James and California Attorney General Rob Bonta, is the largest ever announced with the states. After this, JUUL will now have to keep its products behind retail store counters and verify the age of customers selling or promoting products online.

Under pressure from regulators, Juul pulled most of its flavors from the market in 2019 and stopped most of its advertising. The US Food and Drug Administration briefly banned the products last June, though it halted the ban and agreed to reconsider the action after the company appealed.
