According to a report by British news website Daily Mail, 35-year-old LaShawn Thompson was arrested on June 12 in Atlanta on charges of misconduct, according to police. After his arrest, the accused was taken to the Fulton County Jail and after authorities determined that Thompson had mental health issues, he was placed in a psychiatric wing. But three months later Thompson died.
In a statement, Thompson’s attorney, Michael D. Harper, said that his client was found dead in his jail cell after being “eaten alive by bedbugs and insects.” He called this case one of the most inhuman deaths ever. Harper said that the room in which Thompson was kept was not even fit for a sick animal. He told that he had been in those terrible conditions for months, and no one cared. They demanded that the Fulton County Jail be closed and replaced.

CBS News reported that prison records showed that guards and medical personnel noticed that Thompson’s condition was deteriorating, but did nothing to provide aid or help. Despite a “severe bed bug infestation” in his psychiatric unit cell, the medical examiner’s report stated that Thompson’s body showed no obvious evidence of trauma. The cause of death has been mentioned as unknown in the report.
