The report states that between February 2019 and March 2023, 149,000 Indians tried to enter the US illegally. The TOI report states that in January 2022, 5,459 Indians were caught entering the US illegally. At least 708 were intercepted at the US-Canada border. In January 2023, this number has increased by 35.9% to 7,421. Authorities have detained 2,478 at the US-Canada border. The report shows that Indians were detained during 2,663 attempts to cross the border from Canada in the north or Mexico in the south.

The Times of India report, citing Gujarat police officers and other officials, said that most of those detained are from Gujarat and Punjab. There are also incidents in America and Canada where many Indians including minors have died. A family of four from Dingucha in Gujarat died on the Canada-US border.
