The protest is taking place against the city’s plan to ban coal and wood-fired pizza ovens. Under the new rules, ovens installed in restaurants after 2016 have to install expensive equipment to control emissions. These rules are in line with Local Law 38 of 2015, which was approved during the tenure of former Mayor Bill de Blasio. He attracted people’s attention when he was made fun of for eating pizza with a fork and knife. According to the New York Post, the purpose of these devices is to reduce carbon emissions and particulate matter by 75 percent.
