Washington: The Supreme Court in the US on Thursday banned the use of race and ethnicity during admissions in universities. US President Joe Biden has completely disagreed with this decision. He said the court has set aside precedent and effectively ended affirmative action in higher education. The decision is a major blow to a decades-old practice that has promoted educational opportunities for African-Americans and other minorities.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion that although affirmative action was “made with good intent and implemented in good faith”, it cannot last forever and is unconstitutional discrimination against others. Roberts wrote, ‘The student should be treated as a person on the basis of his experiences – not on the basis of race.’ The court said that universities are free to consider the background of an applicant. Roberts said, ‘Our constitutional history does not tolerate the option where a decision has to be made primarily on the basis of whether the applicant is white, black or other, that in itself is racial discrimination.’

Joe Biden wrote in his tweet, ‘For decades, the Supreme Court has recognized a college’s freedom to decide how to create and provide opportunities to a diverse student body? Today the court effectively ended affirmative action in higher education. I completely disagree with this decision. At the same time, Republican US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said, ‘This college will make the admission process fair and uphold equality under the law.’

For decades, the Supreme Court recognized a college’s freedom to decide how to build a diverse student body and provide opportunity.

Today, the Court walked away from precedent, effectively ending affirmative action in higher education.
