United Nations. An American citizen who crossed the border from South Korea to North Korea has been taken into custody by Kim Jong Un’s army. Giving this information, American officials said that he was an American soldier, who was posted on the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two countries. No immediate details were given about how or why the soldier crossed the heavily guarded border or whether the soldier was on duty.

On the other hand, the United Nations told on Tuesday that efforts are being made to resolve the matter. Indeed, the United Nations Command administers the Demilitarized Zone and the Joint Security Area (JSA); Said that this citizen did not have permission to cross the border. According to the statement of the UN Command, it is believed that the citizen is currently in the custody of the DPRK and our officials are talking with their Korean People’s Army counterparts to resolve this incident.

The man is believed to be the only US citizen currently in North Korean custody. The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) has been declared between the two Koreas which separates the countries. It is one of the most heavily fortified areas in the world. It is full of landmines, surrounded by electric and barbed wire fences and surveillance cameras. Armed guards are on alert round the clock. The DMZ has separated the two countries since the Korean War in the 1950s. The war ended with an armistice, meaning that both sides are still technically at war.

Crossing the Korea border is very dangerous
Dozens of people try to escape from North Korea every year, but crossing the DMZ is extremely dangerous and rare. South Korea said at the time that the last time a soldier in the JSA tried to escape was in 2017. He first drove a vehicle, then ran on foot to cross the border. 40 bullets were fired at this soldier, but he survived. According to data released by the South Korean government, more than 1,000 people fled North Korea to China every year before the epidemic. Six South Koreans are currently in custody in North Korea.

Deterioration of relations between America and the North
Relations between the US and the North deteriorated in 2017 when an American student who had been arrested a year earlier for stealing propaganda signs returned to the US unconscious and later died. Later in 2018, three US citizens were freed during the presidency of Donald Trump. But ultimately, the series of talks between Kim Jong Un and the former president did little to improve the relationship.
