Washington: The US has said that it encourages India and China to discuss issues related to their disputed borders through existing bilateral channels. The US, however, added that it strongly opposes any “unilateral attempt” to claim territory across the border along the established Line of Actual Control.

White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said at her daily press conference on Tuesday, “We are pleased with the news that both sides have stopped the skirmish.” We have kept a close watch on the situation. ”Jean-Pierre was questioned on the skirmish between the soldiers of India and China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) on 9 December. He said, “We encourage India and China to use existing bilateral channels to discuss issues related to disputed borders.” We are happy to see that the skirmish has come to an end for the time being.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh told Parliament on Tuesday that Chinese troops unilaterally attempted to change the status quo in the Yangtse region in Tawang sector on December 9, to which Indian troops retaliated strongly and forced them to return.

In his statement in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Singh said, “The attempt by Chinese troops to encroach on our territory was resolutely confronted by the Indian Army and forced to return.” Some soldiers of both the armies were injured in the skirmish.” Meanwhile, US State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters, “America is closely monitoring the situation arising between India and China. Are in contact with their Indian counterparts.” He reiterated that India is an important strategic partner of the US in the Quad and other multilateral fora.

The Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Defense Ministry, also said that it is closely monitoring the recent developments on the India-China border along the Line of Actual Control. Significantly, this skirmish has taken place at a time when India and China have held 16 rounds of commander-level talks to resolve the eastern Ladakh border standoff that began with a violent clash in the Pangong Lake area in May 2020. .
