The social media company tweeted late on Tuesday, ‘We are relaxing our advertising policy for purpose-based ads in the US.’ The company said on its Twitter Safety account, ‘We also plan to expand political advertising, which we will allow in the coming weeks.’

Significantly, Twitter had banned all political advertisements in 2019 due to growing concern due to the spread of misinformation on social media. In such a situation, this new step of Twitter indicates a departure from its old policy.

The social media company had banned advertisements given by candidates, political parties or elected or appointed government officials. Although now Twitter said, ‘Purpose-based advertising can promote conversations among people on important topics.’
