The UN chief delivered a public lecture at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai on strengthening India-UN partnership and South-South cooperation on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.

The UN chief said that India is among the leading countries in respect of the contribution of military and police personnel in UN peacekeeping operations. Among them is the first women’s police squad from the UN, which was sent under the peacekeeping mission.
“I continue to raise my voice in favor of peace from India; Expanding its global leadership, aligning its foreign policy and development with the SDGs and the Paris Agreement; and urge us to find innovative solutions to the current global crises.”

The UN chief pointed out that India, the next chair of the G20 grouping, will be an important opportunity to bring the values and vision of the developing world to the top table of the global economy.
In this sequence, he said that he expects India’s support for the mobilization of G20 countries on the issue of debt relief.
Many developing countries are under severe debt pressure and need assistance at the multilateral level as well as expanding and extending the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative.
He said that the current global financial system is tilted in favor of rich countries, and India has to play a role in the process of improving it.
The top UN official urged India to become a global superpower in the field of renewable technology, and also a manufacturing hub, to fuel the revolution around the world.
The UN chief said that to deal with the climate crisis, it is important to promote the use of renewable energy.
“Just moving towards energy transition will benefit the hundreds of millions of Indians and others who are facing the triple impact of pollution, energy poverty and the climate crisis.”
