Horrific road accident in America, SUV crushes people standing at bus stand in Texas, 7 killed

Brownsville (USA). An SUV rammed people standing at a bus stop outside a refugee camp in the Texas border town of Brownsville on Sunday, killing seven people and injuring six others. Brownsville police investigator Martin Sandoval said the accident happened at around 8:30 a.m. local time.

Victor Maldonado, refugee director of the Bishop Enrique San Pedro Ozanam Center, said that there was no seating arrangement at the bus stop and people were sitting on the side of the road waiting for the bus. He told that most of the victims of the accident were from Venezuela.

Maldonado said, ‘In the video that has come out of the incident, we see an SUV (Range Rover) run the light about 100 feet (30 meters) away and pass through the people sitting at the bus stop.’ Sister Norma Pimentel, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, said the victims were waiting for a bus to return to the city of Brownsville after spending the night at a night shelter.

Maldonado said that after pulling up to the bus stop, the SUV overturned and continued for about 200 feet (60 meters). He told that some people walking on the footpath about 30 feet (9 meters) away from the people standing on the stand have also come in the grip of the accident. He said that after the incident the driver tried to run away, but the eyewitnesses held him till the police arrived.

Lt. Martin Sandoval of the Brownsville Police Department said the SUV driver was taken into custody. He said that along with the charge of negligent driving, the driver may face additional charges. Sandoval said on Fox News, ‘We are also investigating whether the driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident.’

Sandoval said the driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries sustained when the car overturned. Sandoval said Sunday afternoon that there were no passengers in the car and police did not immediately know the name or age of the driver. Sandoval said, ‘The accused driver did not cooperate at all in the hospital, but he will be taken to our city jail as soon as he leaves here after treatment.’ He further said, ‘Then we will take his fingerprints and then we can be able to know his real identity.’
