New York. Addressing the Indian diaspora in New York on Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed that contemporary India’s leading architects were all non-resident Indians (NRIs) who were open-minded about the outside world.

The Congress leader, who is on the last leg of his three-city tour of the US, said all prominent leaders associated with the country’s freedom struggle, including Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose, were NRIs who were clueless about the outside world. I used to have an open mind.

He said, ‘Mahatma Gandhi, the focal point of the making of modern India, was an NRI. The foundation of India’s freedom movement was laid in South Africa… Nehru, BR Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, were all NRIs and were open-minded about the outside world.’

Rahul Gandhi’s comment is considered very important because the BJP has often accused him of tarnishing India’s image on foreign soil. The BJP has also accused the Congress leader of creating a larger global narrative to defame India.

He also appreciated the Indian-American community living in America. Rahul said, ‘All the great people have been from India, you can see that they all have some special qualities. He discovered the truth, spread it and fought for it. All those people were humble and did not have any kind of arrogance in them. This is how Indians have worked in America and that is why Indians are successful here. I respect you very much for this.

Rahul Gandhi also mentioned the Odisha train accident and targeted the Center and the BJP over it. 275 passengers have died in the accident, while 1,175 are injured. The injured are being treated at various hospitals in Soro, Balasore, Bhadrak and Cuttack.
