security council membership

The Security Council consists of 15 member states, out of which five countries are permanent members – China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States. These permanent members have the right of veto in the Security Council.

The 10 non-permanent members are elected by vote in the UN General Assembly, which has 193 members, and regional representation is also taken into account in this election.

This election is done by secret ballot in the UN General Assembly and to get this temporary membership, countries need to get at least two-thirds of the votes, which are 128 in number.

Even if there is no competition for this membership, it is necessary to get this number of votes for victory.

A total of 192 countries voted in Tuesday’s election, with three seats allocated to the Africa and Asia-Pacific groups, one each to Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

In the race for the one seat allocated to the Eastern Europe region, Slovenia defeated Belarus, with Slovenia receiving 153 votes and Belarus 38. On the other hand, the elections of Algeria, Guyana, Sierra Leone and Republic of Korea were held unopposed.
