UN remembers 26/11 Mumbai attack, pays tribute to victims by planting saplings of solidarity

United Nations. The United Nations also paid tribute to the victims of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack by planting a ‘Solidarity Tree’ at a ceremony held in memory of the victims of terrorism. This event was organized a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Nations Headquarters. The third UN Anti-Terrorism Week began here on Monday with the UN planting a solidarity tree. This plant is planted behind the bust of Mahatma Gandhi in the North East lawn of the United Nations Headquarters.

This statue was presented by India to the United Nations and was installed in December 2022 during India’s presidency of the Security Council. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the International Yoga Day program at the United Nations Headquarters on 21 June. Karambir Kang, a survivor of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, shared his memories of the horrific incident at the sapling planting ceremony. Ten terrorists of Pakistan-based terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba had carried out terror attacks at different places in Mumbai in which more than 166 people had lost their lives.

Kang was the general manager of the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai at the time of the attack where the terrorist attack took place. His wife and two sons were killed in this attack. The United Nations had invited Kang on this occasion. He said, ‘My wife and two young sons who were in the hotel at that time could not survive the attack. In a moment my whole world was destroyed. Kang and his colleagues saved more than 1,900 lives that night of the attack, with the help of some local police personnel.

The United Nations said that the ‘Solidarity Tree’ is planted to pay tribute to the victims of terrorism around the world and reflect the resolve of the international community to prevent and combat violent terrorism and extremism. 11 attack victim and general manager of Taj Hotel Karambir Singh Kang was also invited. Recalling the attack at the felicitation ceremony, Singh recalled the heroic efforts of his staff and some local policemen who saved nearly 1,900 lives.

He said that the selfless actions of the staff and policemen have earned them worldwide praise and recognition for their unwavering resolve against terror. Singh spoke of the indomitable bravery displayed by these brave soldiers by standing their ground against the unarmed and heavily armed terrorists.
