Washington. An agreement has been signed between the American company GE Aerospace and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Now GE Aerospace and HAL will together make fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force. This very important deal has happened at a time when the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is on a state visit to America. This important deal will boost defense cooperation between the two countries. There will be a historic summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden.

GE President and CEO H Lawrence Culp Jr. has said that this has been made possible by our long partnership with India and HAL. This agreement is part of the Light Combat Jet MK2 program of the Indian Air Force. The F-414 jet engines for the LCA MK-ll of the Indian Air Force will now be made in India only. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited needed a powerful engine for the new incarnation of its indigenous fighter aircraft Tejas.

Indian Air Force’s variant of Tejas has American engine
The LCA Mark 2 required a powerful engine. American company General Electric will transfer 80 percent technology of jet engines to HHL. Till now, the variants of Tejas included in the Indian Air Force have the low power engine F 404 of American GE. America also uses this engine in its fighter planes.

A total of 99 engines will be made as per the agreement
GE gave this information in a press release. Under the agreement, both together will make a total of 99 engines for LCA Mark 2. The Indian Air Force is to take around 120 LCA MK-2 jets. Apart from this, this engine is also to be installed in the fifth generation aircraft AMCA – MK-1, whose work is still going on. The LCA MK-2 is single engine, so GE Aerospace will work for the prototype of the AMCA MK-2 program, which will be a twin engine aircraft.

GE Aerospace to Continue Collaboration with Government of India
This agreement is considered important because till now India has been receiving military jets from Russia and European alliance. Recently, India had bought Rafale fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force from French fighter aircraft manufacturer Dessan. At the same time, GE Aerospace will continue to collaborate with the Government of India for the Mk2 engine program of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

This agreement will give economic and national security to both the countries.
The American company said, ‘We are proud of the role played by Biden and Modi in furthering the vision of close coordination between the two countries. Our M414 engine is incomparable and will provide significant economic and national security benefits for both countries as we produce high quality engines for our customers to meet their military needs.’
