First meeting of top US officials with Taliban after the death of Al Qaeda leader Zawahiri

Washington. On Saturday, top officials of the Biden administration met with Taliban men for the first time since the US killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri at his apartment in Kabul in late July. The US sent CIA Deputy Director David Cohen and State Department’s Afghanistan official Tom West to Doha, the capital of Qatar, to negotiate with the Taliban delegation. While the Taliban delegation included their intelligence chief Abdul Haq Wasik.

According to a CNN news report, after Zawahiri was killed, the US accused the Taliban of a clear and gross violation of the Doha Agreement. In which it was said that the Taliban will not give shelter to terrorists. US officials accused the leaders of the Taliban’s Haqqani network of knowing about Zawahiri’s whereabouts after an American drone fired a deadly Hellfire missile at Zawahiri. While the Taliban angrily condemned this operation. Despite this, the US has continued talks with the Taliban, including talks for the release of American citizen Mark Frerich. The presence of CIA deputy director David Cohen and the Taliban’s Wasik at Saturday’s meeting indicates the two sides’ emphasis on cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts.
