Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day state visit to America. On the second day of this state visit, US President Joe Biden and his wife First Lady Jill Biden hosted Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a state dinner at the White House. US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden presented a handmade and antique American book galley from the early 20th century to PM Modi as part of the official gift. President Biden also gifted PM Modi a vintage American camera, along with an archival replica print of George Eastman’s first Kodak camera patent and a hardcover book on American wildlife photography. Jill Biden gifted PM Modi a signed and first edition copy of ‘Collected Poems of Robert Frost: The White House’.

PM Modi gifted a 7.5-carat lab-grown green diamond to America’s first lady Jill Biden. This diamond exhibits the chemical and optical properties of diamonds mined from the earth and is also eco-friendly. Because environmental diverse resources like solar and wind energy have been used in its construction. It symbolizes India’s 75 years of independence and enduring international relations.

PM Modi presented a special gift to President Joe Biden, which symbolizes the Sahasra Poorna Chandrodayam festival ritual. He also presented a special sandalwood box handmade by the skilled craftsmen of Jaipur to the US President. This sandalwood from Mysore has intricately carved flora and fauna patterns. The box contains an idol of Ganesha, a Hindu deity who is considered the destroyer of obstacles and the first of all deities to be worshipped. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his American counterpart Jake Sullivan also attended the dinner, which included President Biden’s favorite dishes of pasta and ice cream.

Guest chef Nina Curtis prepared the menu for the state dinner with First Lady Jill Biden and White House Executive Chef Chris Comerford, White House Executive Pastry Chef Susie Morrison. Chef Nina Curtis is a Cuisine Artist based in Sacramento, CA, known for her exceptional skill and creativity in plant based cuisine. Chef Curtis brings over two decades of experience in key positions and roles such as Director of Culinary and Executive Chef.

White House Social Secretary Carlos Elizondo told that the theme of the state dinner is inspired by India’s national bird peacock. Inspired by PM Modi’s call to promote millets, the First Lady included millet-based dishes at the state dinner held in her honour.

The first course of the state dinner included Marinated Millet and Grilled Corn Kernel Salad, Compressed Watermelon and Tangy Avocado Sauce. The main course included Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms and Creamy Saffron-Infused Risotto. It also included Sumac-Roasted Sea Bass, Lemon-Dill Yogurt Sauce, Crispy Millet Cakes and Summer Squash. Dessert included Strawberry Shortcake with Rose and Cardamom.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also gifted some other special things to President Joe Biden. These include Ghee from Punjab, Handcrafted 24K Hallmarked Gold Coin from Rajasthan, 99.5K Silver Coin, Jaggery from Maharashtra, Rice from Uttarakhand, Sesame from Tamil Nadu, Silver Coconut Handcrafted by Skilled Artisans from West Bengal, Silver Coconut from Gujarat Salt and a lamp was included.

PM Narendra Modi tweeted after dinner at the White House, ‘I thank the President of the United States of America Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for hosting me at the White House today. We had a great conversation on many subjects. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the US Congress today. PM Modi will also have a bilateral meeting with President Joe Biden.

Before leaving for the White House, PM Modi met Gary E Dickerson, President and CEO of Applied Materials, Sanjay Mehrotra, President and CEO of Micron Technology and H Lawrence Culp Jr, President and CEO of General Electric, Electric Aerospace. PM Modi, who arrived in Washington DC on Wednesday, started his day by participating in the ‘Skilling for Future’ event, where he said that India-United States partnership will serve as the driving engine behind sustainable and inclusive global growth.

PM Modi is the third Indian leader to make a state visit to America. The other two visits were made by former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in June 1963 and by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in November 2009. PM Modi’s US tour will end on June 24. He will reach the capital Cairo on June 25 on a state visit to Egypt. The invitation was given to him in January 2023 by the President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, during the Republic Day celebrations of India.
