Beijing. The US has issued an advisory for its citizens to reconsider travel to China, given the risk of arbitrary law enforcement, exit restrictions and wrongful detention. No specific case was cited, but the advice comes after a 78-year-old US man was sentenced to life in prison on espionage charges in May. This comes after (China’s) passage of a comprehensive foreign relations law last week that threatens to retaliate against those who harm China’s interests.

China has also recently passed a comprehensively written anti-espionage law, under which offices have been raided. This has created a flutter in the foreign trade community. Along with this, a law has also been made to ban foreign critics. The US advisory said, “The government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) arbitrarily enforces local laws, including issuing exit bans on US citizens and citizens of other countries, without fair and transparent process under the law .”

“US citizens traveling to or residing in the PRC may be detained without access to US consular services or knowledge of their alleged offense,” the advisory said. The top US diplomat said he has taken up the cases of three Americans wrongly detained in China, Kai Li, Mark Swidden and David Lin, and said talks are underway to try to secure their release. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will visit the Chinese capital this week as part of continued efforts to stabilize relations between China and the US. (Input from ANI)
