The death toll in violent clashes between Iranian forces has reached 41

Washington, US President Joe Biden has expressed serious concern over the crackdown on people who are peacefully protesting in Iran, saying that the perpetrators of violence will have to face its consequences. Significantly, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was taken into custody by Morality Police for allegedly not wearing a hijab, and after her death, protests broke out across the country. Iranian security forces took repressive action against the protesters.

In a stern message to Iran, Biden said that the Iranian government has denied fundamental freedoms to its people for decades and has suppressed the aspirations of future generations through threats, force and violence. America stands with Iranian women and all citizens of Iran who are inspiring the world with their bravery.

He said the US is making it easier for Iranian citizens to access the Internet. The US is also holding Iranian officials and organizations such as the Morality Police accountable for inciting violence to suppress civil society. According to the US President, America will impose sanctions this week on the perpetrators of violence against peaceful protesters. The US made it clear that it will continue to hold Iranian officials accountable and support the rights of the Iranian people to protest freely.

Biden further said that he is deeply concerned about reports of intensification of violent crackdowns on peaceful protesters, including students and women, in Iran demanding their rights and basic human dignity.

Iranian state TV said the death toll in violent clashes between protesters and Iranian security forces had reached 41. Human rights groups have claimed a higher number of people killed. Local authorities claim to have arrested at least 1,500 people.
