Washington. A new virus like S-CoV-2 found in bats in Russia is capable of infecting humans and the vaccines being given against Kovid-19 have no effect on it. This has been revealed in a study. A team of researchers at Washington State University (WSU) found that the virus found in bats, Khosta-2, contains spike proteins that can infect human cells and collect blood serum from people who have been vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. They are resistant in terms of both the method and the antibody therapy.

Any virus uses spike proteins to enter and infect human cells. Both Khosta-2 and SARS-CoV-2 fall under the same sub-category of coronaviruses as sarbecovirus. Study author Michael Letko said, ‘Our research also shows that sarbecoviruses found in wildlife outside Asia are also a threat to global health and the ongoing vaccination campaign against SARS-CoV-2. Such a situation has also been seen in places like West Russia where Khosta-2 has been found.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Pathogens, also underscores the need to develop global vaccines that provide protection against sarbecovirus in general, rather than only known forms of SARS-CoV-2. “At this point, some groups are trying to develop a vaccine that not only protects against the S-2 variant, but actually protects us against sarbecovirus in general,” Letko said. “Unfortunately, many of our current vaccines are designed for specific viruses that we know infect human cells or that we are most at risk of becoming infected with,” he said.
