According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 1:05 pm local time. At least one person died in this strong earthquake on Monday. Buildings were damaged, electricity went out, and residents of Mexico City were sent to the streets for safety. President Andres Manuel López Obrador said in a video address that one person was killed when a wall collapsed in a store. Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said there were no immediate reports of damage after the quake struck the capital.

In a message before announcing the death in his address, López Obrador said there was damage in areas near the epicenter of the quake. The buildings are seen badly damaged in the pictures posted on social media. The epicenter of the quake was 37 km southeast of Aquila, near the border between the states of Colima and Michoacán, at a depth of 15.1 km. The magnitude of the earthquake was initially reported as 7.5.

Significantly, earthquake tremors were felt in Mexico in 1985 and 2017 on the same day (September 19).
