San Jose. A passenger bus fell 75 meters into a gorge on the Inter-American Highway in the Central American country of Costa Rica, killing at least nine people on board and injuring 34 others. Officials said that the accident occurred due to landslides caused by heavy rains. The accident happened on Saturday in Cambroneiro, 70 kilometers from San Jose. The crash site is on a highway that connects the Costa Rican capital to the Pacific coastal province of Puntarenas.

The Red Cross organization said that two vehicles collided with the bus due to a landslide and the bus fell into a ditch down the road. Police said emergency teams pulled out four of the nine bodies on Sunday. According to the Red Cross, 34 people have been injured. Costa Rica’s Red Cross said of the 34 wounded, six had minor injuries. A total of 28 people were taken to hospitals, out of which at least three are in critical condition. Two people are said to be missing. The bus was on a trip between the province of San Jose and Santa Cruz de Guanacaste in the country’s northwest.

Significantly, Cyclone Fiona made landfall on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico on Sunday. Due to this it is raining heavily. Due to which there was power outage in the area and there is a danger of ‘catastrophic flood’ in the area. The storm is classified as a Category 1 hurricane due to winds of up to 85 miles (140 kph) per hour. But it is predicted to become more destructive in the next few hours. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said devastating flooding was expected in both Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
