UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his message on World Maritime Day, has said that maritime transport represents more than 80 percent of global trade.
Meanwhile, the Ukraine War, and the Black Sea Grain Export Initiative, have underscored the important role that shipping or sea transport plays in providing food security for people around the world.
Shipping Emission Reduction
The UN chief said that as shipping continues to connect humanity, it must also play a key role in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and create a just and prosperous future for all people around the world and for the planet Earth.
The UN Secretary-General stressed that the maritime transport sector, “must increase its pace to reduce carbon emissions”.
He cautioned that if concrete global action is not taken, carbon emissions from the maritime transport sector are expected to increase substantially.
Antonio Guterres said, “The governments of countries and private sector companies must work together to make it easier to use innovative technologies such as digital and automation, and make possible such a equitable change that includes developing countries and that can lead to renewable energy and energy production. Alternative fuels should be encouraged.
“The ships to be deployed in this decade will determine whether the shipping sector will achieve the goal of zero emissions by 2030. Vessels that are green and zero carbon should become the common choice and be commercially available by 2030.”
Concerns for seafarers
Celebrations of World Seas Day are also a platform to showcase inclusive maritime innovation, research and development, and the demonstration and use of innovative technologies.
Kitack Lim, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), says this year’s theme opens up space for greater discussions about what the destinations of maritime transport are, and how digital and automation technologies can support the sector. .
“But for cleaner, safer and more sustainable shipping, technological solutions must also benefit people,” he stressed.
“In this regard, the impact on seafarers and other marine personnel, including their training needs, must also be taken into account.”
