digital desk, Washington. Sea levels in the US coastline will rise 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) above average current levels by the year 2050. This information is given in a report.
According to an inter-agency task force report, coastal flooding will increase significantly over the next 30 years due to sea level rise. The task force includes NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other federal agencies.
Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying that the increase in sea height over the next 30 years could be equal to the total increase seen in the last 100 years.
The task force developed its near-term sea level rise projections, based on a better understanding of how the processes that contribute to rising seas, such as the melting of glaciers and ice sheets. Simultaneously, the interaction between sea, land and ice will be affected by the height of the sea.
“This report supports previous studies and confirms what we have known for a long time, with sea levels rising at an alarming rate, putting communities around the world at risk,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.
The science is undeniable and urgent action is needed to mitigate the climate crisis, which is well underway, he said.
