In a message ahead of the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’, celebrated every year on 25 November, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that violence against women and girls is the biggest violation of human rights in the world. He said that every 11 minutes a woman or a girl is killed by her life partner or family member. This statement of Guterres has come at a time when the country has been shaken by the gruesome murder and dismemberment of a young woman by her live-in partner in Delhi’s Mehrauli.
According to a Times of India news, Guterres also appealed to governments to increase funds for women’s rights organizations and movements by 50 percent by 2026. The UN Secretary-General cautioned that other stressors, from the COVID-19 pandemic to economic upheaval, inevitably lead to more physical and verbal abuse against women. Along with this, women and girls face widespread online violence in many ways such as hate speech, sexual harassment, misuse of photos, she said.

Significantly, a recent UN report titled ‘Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: Gender Snapshot 2022’ said that violence within homes remains a serious issue. The report shows that globally more than 1 in 10 women and girls aged 15-49 were subjected to sexual and/or physical violence by an intimate partner in the past year.
